What Is Hepatitis A?
Hepatitis A is a virus spread via contaminated food and water, often in areas with poor sanitation. It causes liver inflammation and symptoms such as nausea, fatigue, jaundice, and fever.
Risk areas include parts of Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.
Hepatitis A Vaccine
Two doses, 6–12 months apart
First dose gives short-term protection; second provides long-term immunity (20+ years)
Often combined with Hepatitis B in a single injection
What Is Hepatitis B?
Hepatitis B is a blood-borne and sexually transmitted infection. Risk factors include:
Medical or dental procedures abroad
Tattooing or piercing
Unprotected sex
Contact sports or potential blood exposure
Hepatitis B Vaccine
Three-dose series over 6 months (or an accelerated 3–4 week schedule if needed)
Can be combined with Hepatitis A in a dual vaccine
Booster may be advised after 5–10 years depending on exposure
Do You Need Both?
If you’re travelling long-term, engaging in high-risk activities, or working/volunteering abroad, both vaccines are highly recommended. A combined Hep A+B vaccine is convenient and cost-effective.
Are These Vaccines Required for Entry?
No country requires hepatitis vaccines for entry, but many travel health guidelines strongly recommend them for at-risk travellers.
Side Effects & Safety
Both vaccines are well-tolerated. You may experience:
Mild soreness at the injection site
Fatigue or low-grade fever for 24–48 hours
These are temporary and far outweighed by the protection offered.
